What The Informer Is About
Dublin, 1922. Gypo Nolan has been thrown out of the Irish Republican Army and drinks. Wanting the fare to America for himself and his girlfriend, he informs on his closest friend Frankie for twenty pounds. The money is in his pocket, and across one night he throws all of it away on drink and display, because he cannot get what he did out of his head. John Ford directed: foggy, dark, almost entirely built on studio sets. It won four Oscars, for director, actor, screenplay and score. Dudley Nichols, who wrote it, refused his over a union dispute.
