What The Crying Game Is About
Neil Jordan's 1992 film follows a member of a paramilitary group who talks with a hostage soldier. The soldier asks him for a promise. In London he tries to keep it. The film leaves its political line behind in the second half; the narrative turns to identity and attachment. The screenplay won an Academy Award. Stephen Rea and Jaye Davidson lead. Using a character's trans identity as a shock is criticised today. Who it's for: those who like unconventional political drama. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with that approach to trans representation; the scene is staged as a twist.
