What The Butcher Boy Is About
Ireland in the sixties. Francie is twelve and lives with his friend Joe inside a world of comics and games. At home there is a father who drinks and turns violent and a mother thinking of killing herself. Unable to carry the weight, Francie escapes into the world inside his head, and that world gradually replaces the real one; it ends in appalling violence. Neil Jordan adapted Patrick McCabe's novel and never lets go of the black comedy, which makes it harder to watch rather than easier. Suicide, child abuse and murder are in the material.
