The 1998 Berlinale gave Neil Jordan the Silver Bear for Best Director for The Butcher Boy. That same year, assessing the film that came next, Richard Kelly takes his measure from exactly that one: Jordan truly felt Patrick McCabe's murderous butcher boy, he writes, but his heart is harder this time, and he counts him an artist with little interest in naturalism.
