What Mona Lisa Is About
A man just out of prison takes a job driving a woman between wealthy clients through the night. Neil Jordan begins as though this will be a love story, but the subject is really misunderstanding: he casts himself in a rescue, and what she wants from him is something else entirely. Bob Hoskins plays that mismatch through bewilderment rather than toughness, which keeps the character pitiable even when he is funny. Nocturnal London is never romanticised here, just cheap hotel corridors and car parks. It works because it refuses to let good intentions count as enough.
