What Girls Will Be Girls Is About
Richard Day's 2003 comedy follows three women living on the edge of Hollywood, with all three parts taken by performers who came from the drag stage. Evie Harris, briefly a name in the seventies and then forgotten, waits in her crumbling house for a television special about her old glory. Coco, her housemate and friend, keeps trying to calm things down. Varla, who arrives to rent a room, is the daughter of Evie's dead rival and has an account of her mother's still open. It is an open parody of everything from Sunset Boulevard to Baby Jane; some of its language belongs to its own moment and lands hard from here. Jack Plotnick, Coco Peru and Varla Jean Merman star.
