What Go Tell the Spartans Is About
Vietnam, 1964. America is not yet in the war at scale; what it has on the ground are small units with advisory status. Major Barker is ordered to hold an abandoned position called Muc Wa. When they get there they find a French cemetery: a French unit died on that same spot ten years earlier. The inscription over the graves is from Thermopylae, telling the passer-by to go tell the Spartans. Barker can see the same ending coming and has to carry out the order anyway. Ted Post's film is one of the early and lesser-known American films about Vietnam, and it tells the war through futility rather than heroism. Burt Lancaster leads.
