A review Jose Arroyo wrote in 1997 shows how long one performance of 1954 went on lasting: the character in the film under his review identifies so completely with the charming drifter Burt Lancaster played in Vera Cruz that the scene of his death turns into the ending of Vera Cruz. The Italian academy gave him three awards, a special David in 1974 attached to no film, the foreign actor category the very next year for Conversation Piece, and that same category in 1981 for Atlantic City. The Berlinale had handed him an acting Silver Bear in 1956 for Trapeze; his name heads the credits on each of the three films that carry an award. Of the fifty-one works kept here he directed one.
