What The Midnight Man Is About
This mystery, directed jointly by Roland Kibbee and Burt Lancaster, takes place on a university campus. Jim Slade, a former policeman and former convict, works there as a night watchman. When a female student is murdered he is drawn reluctantly into the investigation and before long finds himself among the suspects. The film is interested less in solving the killing than in how every step of a man living on parole is watched: his record puts him first in line every time. Lancaster both acts and directs; apart from The Kentuckian this is the only film he directed, and he later said he did not think much of it. The ending is left unspoiled here.
