What Trapeze Is About
Trapeze, directed by Carol Reed, stars Burt Lancaster as trapeze flyer Mike Ribble; Lancaster was genuinely a skilled circus acrobat before acting and performed most of his own stunts as a catcher. The most dangerous move, the climactic triple somersault, was performed by technical consultant Eddie Ward of the Ringling Brothers Circus. Lancaster's childhood friend Nick Cravat served as an adviser and body double on the film. Who it's for: anyone curious about a classic built on Burt Lancaster's real circus background, centered on genuinely dangerous trapeze acts. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a circus film built purely on special effects, since this one leans on real acrobatic skill.
