What The Crimson Pirate Is About
Captain Vallo is a Caribbean pirate interested in nothing but his own advantage, and while planning to sell weapons to both the rebels and the crown he ends up inside an actual revolution. Although made by a director who came out of noir, Robert Siodmak's film is entirely cheerful; the story mocks itself continuously and Vallo speaks straight to the audience. Burt Lancaster began as a circus acrobat and uses all of it here, swinging from masts, tumbling on rigging and working with almost no double. Nick Cravat, his old circus partner, plays the silent sidekick. The colour and the shipboard sequences are above the standard of the period. Who it is for: viewers who like classic pirate films and physical comedy. Who it is not for: anyone after realism, since nothing here is taken seriously.
