What God's Neighbors Is About
In the Bat Yam neighbourhood in Israel, three young men, Avi, Kobi and Yaniv, take themselves for the guardians of its morals: they interfere with how women dress, enforce the observance of the Sabbath and drive out people from elsewhere. They do not hesitate to use violence, and their neighbours both fear them and speak well of them. Miri, who moves into the area, neither knows nor cares about these rules, and Avi, who leads the group, is caught between what he feels and what he has promised his friends. The film condemns neither religious life nor the group as a whole; it shows how violence comes to think itself justified. Roy Assaf appears in Meni Yaish’s hundred and two minute Israeli film.
