What Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla Is About
This entry in the Millennium run builds its weapon on the skeleton of the original Godzilla, the one killed in 1954, and calls it Kiryu. That single idea carries the picture, because the weapon is also a grave: in the first engagement the machine hears the new Godzilla roar, the old memory inside it wakes, and it stops taking orders. Masaaki Tezuka hangs the story on Akane Yashiro, the pilot assigned to Kiryu, so the centre of the film is a soldier carrying guilt rather than the monsters themselves. The suit and miniature work is among the cleanest of this period, with digital effects kept in reserve. Who it is for: viewers who want the human half of a Godzilla film taken seriously alongside mechanical monster fights. Who it is not for: newcomers, since it assumes you know the 1954 original.
