What Goemon Is About
Not a historical drama but a fantasy shot almost entirely against green screen, closer to a comic book than to a period film. Goemon is the legendary thief and ninja who robs the rich for the poor; a box he steals turns out to hold a secret that can change the country's future, and he falls into the power struggle following Nobunaga's death. Kiriya pushes the image to excess: colour, slowed-down fights, impossible camera moves. It is the wrong place to look for history, which is used only as a floor. The action is deliberately overblown.
