What Going for Gold Is About
An Australian family and teen film. Emma is seventeen and moves to Australia because of her father, a former air force officer, and joins the cheerleading squad at her new school. The hierarchy on the team, the pressure of competition and the wish to prove herself build the story. It follows the sports film template to the letter: the new girl kept outside, the hard coach, the broken trust, the big final routine. Competitive cheerleading is genuinely widespread in Australia and the film takes it seriously. The choreography is the best of it.
