What Going Home Is About
Johan grew up in the Dutch East Indies. His father was an official of the colonial administration. As a boy his closest friend was Oeroeg. Oeroeg was from there. The two of them grew up together. Then Johan went to the Netherlands to study. While he was away the country declared independence. Its new name was Indonesia. Johan was sent back as a soldier. A young driver named Twan is with him. Returning puts his childhood in front of him. His father is missing. Oeroeg has joined the fight for independence. The two of them are now on opposite sides. The story comes from a 1948 novel by Hella Haasse. Jeroen Krabbé and Rik Launspach appear in the hundred and fourteen minute film, a Dutch, Belgian and Indonesian production Hans Hylkema finished in 1993.
