Golem loosely draws on Gustav Meyrink's 1915 novel of the same name, reimagining the golem figure from Jewish folklore as a genetic clone in a 21st century dystopia; it's the first film in director Piotr Szulkin's Apocalypse Tetralogy, completed with 1986's GA-GA: Glory to the Heroes. The film won Best Debut Director at the Polish Film Festival and the Grand Prix Monolit and Best Screenplay at the 1981 Madrid International Fantastic Film Festival. Who it's for: anyone curious about the opening film of a director's apocalypse themed tetralogy, reimagining the Jewish folklore golem as a genetic clone. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a faithful adaptation of the source novel, since the film draws only loose inspiration from it.
