What Ga-ga: Glory to the Heroes Is About
Scope is a prisoner on an enormous space station. Like every prisoner there, he is pressed into volunteering for the exploration of distant planets. Landing on planet Australia 458, he is given a hero's welcome: drink, women, applause, ceremony. The welcome has a price, and Scope only works out what it is while the ceremony is under way. Piotr Szulkin uses science fiction as direct allegory. The distant planet, the punishment as spectacle and the state ceremony were written in a Poland where every line carried a second meaning. The tone is black comedy, with pageantry and rot side by side. Daniel Olbrychski, Jerzy Stuhr and Katarzyna Figura are in the cast. The production design is deliberately worn and cheap: not a gleaming future but a neglected one. Who it's for: Viewers curious about Eastern European science fiction, dystopian satire, and Polish cinema of the 1980s. Who it's not for: The telling is fragmentary and the plot does little beyond carrying symbols. It can stay closed to viewers who do not know the context of the allegory.
