Decalogue X

Two brothers, Artur and Jerzy, inherit their father's stamp collection when he dies. Once they learn what it is worth their lives change: they install an alarm, they start suspecting each other, and they take unthinkable steps to complete the set. The thing their father left behind ties both of them to itself. Krzysztof Kieslowski directed. It is the tenth and last part of Dekalog and its commandment is that you shall not covet. Zbigniew Zamachowski plays Artur, Jerzy Stuhr plays Jerzy and Henryk Bista plays the shopkeeper. Jacek Blawut photographed it and it runs 55 minutes. This part is separated from the rest of the series by tone: it is not bleak but an outright black comedy. The series screened in the Special Events section of the 46th Venice International Film Festival in September 1989. This episode went out ahead of the others, on Polish Television on 24 June 1989. Who it is for: anyone who has watched Dekalog through and wants to breathe at the end, and viewers who like comedies built on greed. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the heavy register of the series. Kieslowski chooses laughter here, and for some viewers it sits wrong.
