Ruth, a nursing assistant, is burgled and the police do not care. With her neighbour Tony she decides to find her things herself. A simple search turns into a confrontation with armed men and finally into a robbery at a mansion. It is Macon Blair's first film as director. Melanie Lynskey plays Ruth and Elijah Wood plays Tony. Blair wrote the part of Ruth with Lynskey in mind. Principal photography took place in Portland, Oregon in April 2016. It premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize in the US Dramatic Competition. Netflix released it in February 2017. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 89 percent from 62 reviews, the consensus saying it transcends its unwieldy title to offer timely, intoxicatingly dark observations on gender dynamics and social norms in modern America. Matt Zoller Seitz wrote that Lynskey carries an entire movie mainly with her eyes, face and shoulders. Who it is for: viewers who like black humour and independent films where violence lands suddenly. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a light comedy. The third act is unexpectedly bloody.
