What Good Mother Is About
Hafsia Herzi's film is set on a housing estate in the northern quarters of Marseille. Nora, a cleaner in her fifties, looks after her small family; her son Ellyes has been in prison for months, waiting to be tried over a robbery. Nora tries to make that waiting as light as she can for everyone, and the film watches the daily effort rather than any large event: shifts, visiting days, money, the balances inside a household. The cast is largely non-professional, and Halima Benhamed, who plays Nora, was found while accompanying Sabrina Benhamed, who plays her daughter, to the auditions. It took the ensemble prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes.
