What Goodbye, Father Is About
For thirteen year old Filipe, a summer holiday in the Azores with his father is like a dream come true. But as the holiday goes on the boy begins to see the gap between what his father says and the life he actually leads; the man’s promises and what he can do are not the same. Dreaming becomes here a form of escape, and not only for the child. The film tells the relation between father and son not through a great quarrel but through the piling up of small disappointments. The account does not make the man bad; it shows him falling short. Afonso Pimentel and Joao Lagarto appear in Luis Filipe Rocha’s eighty five minute Portuguese film, completed in 1996.
