What Goodbye, Trainmen Is About
Vähy and Hapa, two boys growing up in the town of Pori, swear a blood oath meant to last forever. As the years pass their paths separate: one leaves to study in Helsinki, the other stays home working construction and falls in love, and both go looking for a place of their own in the world, drifting further apart the longer they look. Kari Paljakka’s eighty six minute Finnish Swedish co-production tells the end of a friendship not through a great quarrel but through a silence that slowly grows. Juha Lehtovuori wrote the screenplay. Santeri Kinnunen and Samuli Edelmann lead with Liisa Mustonen in support, and the film was among the most watched domestic releases in Finland in 1992.
