What Goto, Island of Love Is About
Goto is an island cut off from the world after an earthquake. There is a strange order on it: a dictator, a palace, a hierarchy, and rules everybody knows and nobody questions. Grozo, a petty thief, climbs that hierarchy rung by rung. What he is after is Glossia, the dictator's unhappy wife. Walerian Borowczyk's first feature. The film is almost entirely in black and white, with only a few objects in colour. The telling is not realist; it builds the logic of a closed world, in which the totalitarian order appears not as a political thesis but as a strange and uncomfortable mechanism. Ligia Branice plays Glossia.
