Yuriy Ovsyanko What Grandma Is About
Lidiya Bobrova's Russian film follows an old woman who lived through the Battle of Stalingrad. She gave her children everything she had over a lifetime and in the end sold her own house and handed the money to her grandchildren. Now she has nowhere to stay, and she is passed from one grandchild to the next among people who have built lives in the new Russia; none of them wants to keep her for long. Bobrova is not reaching for tears and does not turn anyone into a monster; she shows how old age quietly gets renamed as a burden. Nina Shubina's performance is the centre of it. It took a special jury prize at Karlovy Vary in 2003.
