What Grandma Is About
In the house of an Argentine family lives a grandmother close to a hundred years old, and she eats without stopping. Filling her is impossible. The family tries rationing first, then working more, then borrowing. The woman goes on eating and the household slowly collapses. Nobody can say anything to her, because after all she is the elder of the family. Héctor Olivera directed the film from a play by Roberto Cossa. The grandmother is played by a man, Pepe Soriano, and that choice takes the film out of realism from the start. The telling is black comedy: the old woman is not a person but the burden the family has to carry. The film was made in Argentina under the military government.
