Great Yarmouth: Provisional Figures

October 2019, the town of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Brexit is three months away. Hundreds of Portuguese migrant workers are pouring into the town. All of them are looking for work at the local turkey factories. Tânia once worked in those poultry plants herself. She is now married to an English hotel owner. The Portuguese workers call her the Mother of the Portuguese. Everything that passes between the workers and the people who hire them goes through her. She speaks the language of the factory floor and the language of the hotel. That makes her the person both sides need. Her own plan is something else. She wants to become a British citizen. She is thinking of refurbishing her husband’s derelict hotels into homes for the elderly. That, she hopes, will take her out of this dirty business. The three months left before Brexit hang over every calculation. Beatriz Batarda and Nuno Lopes appear in the hundred and thirteen minute film, a Portuguese and French co-production Marco Martins finished in 2022.
