What Saint George Is About
In 2011 Portugal entered what was called the troika period: cuts and restructuring administered by the European Union, the IMF and the European Central Bank, with household debt reaching a level people could not carry. Jorge is an unemployed boxer about to lose his son and his wife, who has decided to go back to Brazil. To clear his own debt and keep her in the country he takes a job with a debt collection agency. What that job actually is becomes clear soon enough. Marco Martins folds documentary into the fiction. Nuno Lopes won best actor in the Orizzonti section at Venice in 2016. The film was submitted as Portugal's Oscar entry.
