A Hero

A man in prison over a debt returns the gold coins he finds during a two-day leave to their owner. The story spreads, and soon everyone wants a different version of it from him. The film is about how goodness comes to require proof; the narrative makes a small lie necessary at every step, and the ground gives way as he accepts them. Nobody is exactly acting in bad faith; everyone is protecting their own interest. Asghar Farhadi wrote and directed. It took the Grand Prix at Cannes. A copyright case was brought over the origin of the film and the process ran on for a long time. Who it's for: those who like Iranian drama built on moral dilemma. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a clear resolution; the film clears nobody.
