What Grow Your Own Is About
A refugee family is given a plot on a set of allotments. The people who have worked those gardens for years look at the new neighbours with suspicion, and an argument starts about who may plant what and where, and which rules apply to whom. In time the ground itself becomes a shared language, and the two sides come to know each other not by talking but by working side by side. The film handles its subject without delivering a lesson, in the calm tone of English comedy, and declares nobody the villain. Benedict Wong and Eddie Marsan appear in Richard Laxton’s ninety seven minute British film, completed in 2007.
