What An Englishman in New York Is About
At the end of the seventies, past seventy himself, Quentin Crisp leaves London and settles in New York. He performs a one-man show, writes for the papers, talks at parties. When the AIDS epidemic begins, a remark of his turns the people around him against him and is not forgiven for years. In the same period he becomes friends with the painter Patrick Angus. Crisp grows older and more alone and gives up none of his manner. He becomes someone everyone in the city knows and nobody stands beside. Richard Laxton directs the British television film; seventy-five minutes, with John Hurt as Crisp. Hurt had played the same part in The Naked Civil Servant in 1975, thirty-four years earlier. Denis O'Hare and Cynthia Nixon are in the cast.
