What The Boys in the Band Is About
A birthday party in a Manhattan apartment. Michael has gathered a few people for his friend Harold. As the evening goes on the drink increases, the jokes turn cruel, and Michael forces everyone into a telephone game: ring the person you have really loved and tell them. What follows is wreckage. Netflix remade it in 2020; this is not that version. From Mart Crowley's play; William Friedkin directed, and the entire original stage cast plays it on film. It came out in 1970, a year after Stonewall, and it was criticised then and since for the self-loathing in it.
