What Love Is Strange Is About

Two men who have lived together for thirty nine years finally marry, and one of them loses his job precisely because of it. Ira Sachs declines to build a courtroom drama on that injustice. What interests him is the duller and truer consequence: they can no longer make the rent in New York. The couple is split between other people's spare rooms, and there the film finds its real subject, which is the slow attrition of being a houseguest. Nobody behaves badly and everything frays anyway. Lithgow and Molina play long habit rather than romance, and it holds the picture together.
