What Guie’dani’s Navel Is About
Guie’dani, a Zapotec girl, is taken to Mexico City by her mother to help with her work in the house of an upper-class family. She does not fit and has no wish to, and refuses the politely administered humiliation that runs through the household. Everything shifts when she becomes friends with Claudia, another girl with no patience for any of it. Xavi Sala’s first feature tells the story of racism against indigenous people in Mexico from inside the servant’s room, and does it by accumulating small daily details rather than raising its voice. Sótera Cruz took a special mention at Morelia, and the film played more than forty festivals and won nine awards.
