Barbara is a young woman sunk in despair and thinking about killing herself, while a man she meets in a church and a married couple try to persuade her that life is still worth living. Jonas Mekas opens that small drama out onto the alienation, the politics and the general unrest of America at the start of the sixties. The poetry interludes were written and spoken by Allen Ginsberg. Lucia Dlugoszewski composed the score and folk songs run through the film. There are two couples: Frances Stillman and Adolfas Mekas as Barbara and Gregory, Argus Spear Juillard and Ben Carruthers as Argus and Ben. Mekas opens with a statement of his own, saying that the madness of the world had kept him from finishing it.
