What Out-Takes from the Life of a Happy Man Is About
Jonas Mekas's 2012 film was assembled from footage shot across forty years and never used. Mekas filmed the way others keep a diary, and this material was chosen from what had not entered other films. The arrangement is not chronological. Family, friends, streets and travel follow one after another, with Mekas's voice cutting in to speak about remembering itself. The images were taken handheld in short bursts. Mekas had left Lithuania after the war, and here too he speaks about not losing hold of happiness. This is one of his late works. Who it's for: those who like experimental and diary cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a story; the film has no plot.
