Birds of Exile

When his business in Maraş fails, Tahir Ağa sells everything he owns and moves to Istanbul with his wife Hatice, his sons Selim, Murat and Kemal and his daughter Fatoş. He plans to open a repair shop and run it with his older sons, while Kemal continues his studies and Fatoş helps her mother. But Tahir Ağa is swindled by a man passing himself off as a company owner and loses all his money, and what is left is trying to recover with a small shop. Halit Refiğ wrote the film with Orhan Kemal, and it was among the first to take internal migration from Anatolia to Istanbul directly as its subject, influencing Turkish cinema for years. It is also an early sign of the approach Refiğ would later call National Cinema. It won best film and best director at the Antalya festival.
