What Guys & Balls Is About

Ecki works in his family's bakery and keeps goal for his small town's football team. On the day he loses the big match he is also seen getting close to another player, and his teammates throw him out. He promises to come back one day with a side that will beat them. With help from his sister, a nurse, he works the bars of the city and assembles a squad: a set of people with nothing in common who also cannot play football. Sherry Hormann uses the shape of the sports comedy while actually being about being accepted. She takes the town's homophobia seriously and refuses to reduce anyone in the film to a single trait. It did well at the German box office. The outcome is predictable and the road there is cheerful and generous.
