What Hangin' with the Homeboys Is About

Four friends in the Bronx decide to go down to Manhattan on a Friday night. Willie says everything that happens is down to racism, Tom dreams of acting, Vinny is a Puerto Rican who passes himself off as Italian, and Johnny works in a supermarket and is afraid to apply to college. As the night goes on none of the plans hold up and the four of them are forced to actually get to know each other. Joseph B. Vasquez wrote and directed the film, which screened at Sundance in 1991, where he won the Waldo Salt screenwriting award. The script was written in three days. It was shot in the South Bronx and became one of the few pieces of independent American cinema of the period to tell Black and Latino young men outside a crime story. John Leguizamo plays Johnny and Doug E. Doug plays Willie.
