What Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid Is About
The sea king's youngest daughter falls in love with the prince she pulls from a wrecked ship. She goes to the sea witch to trade her tail for legs, and the price is her voice. She comes ashore and lives beside the prince, and because she cannot speak she cannot tell him she is the one who saved him. This 1975 Toei Animation film stays faithful to Andersen; unlike the Disney version, the ending has not been changed. Sixty-eight minutes. Seventies Japanese animation and the original pain of the story, together. It is a children's film and its ending does not go down easily with children.
