What Okko's Inn Is About
Twelve-year-old Okko loses both parents in a car accident and moves into the hot-spring inn her grandmother runs. Waiting for her there are a ghost boy only she can see, training to be an innkeeper, and the troubles of the guests who arrive. She resists the work at first and then takes it seriously. Kitaro Kosaka directed; the drawing is soft and the pace unhurried. Several summaries call Okko a young warrior, which is a mistranslation: she is learning to run an inn. The look is cheerful, but a death opens the film and grief sits under all of it.
