What Hanzo the Razor: Who's Got the Gold? Is About
Hanzo Itami is a police officer in the Edo period who has no regard for any of his superiors. In this film he goes after a ghost, foils thieves, meets Heisuke Takei from his youth again, and protects Genan Sugino, a physician in danger for having criticised his lord. Along the way he uncovers a hidden arrangement involving young wives and a blind music teacher. He also gets the better of a corrupt official in the man's own house. It is the last of the three Hanzo films with Shintaro Katsu in the lead; Katsu was playing Zatoichi in the same years. The series belongs to the hard exploitation strand common in Japan in the seventies, and Hanzo's method of getting information out of women rests on sexual violence; the film presents that as heroism, and from today that is its most disturbing aspect. Yoshio Inoue directed. Eighty-four minutes.
