Arkady Sharogradsky What Happy Days Is About
A nameless man discharged from a St Petersburg hospital with a head injury wanders a collapsed and emptied city looking for somewhere to stay. He does not remember who he is; he has no past and knows nobody. Walking the streets he falls in with an odd beggar who goes about with a donkey and with a woman whose mind is not steady. It was Aleksei Balabanov's first feature. It comes not from Beckett's play of the same title but from his prose, above all First Love and the texts around it. The city is nearly empty and the trams run back and forth with no purpose. It screened in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 1992.
