What The Castle Is About
A land surveyor arrives in the village he was supposedly summoned to, and nobody is expecting him and nobody can say what the job is. He wants to speak to the administration up in the castle above the village. Every attempt runs him into another official, another rule, another door. The more impossible getting inside becomes, the more he wants it. Aleksei Balabanov's 1994 film comes from Kafka's unfinished novel. Where the book breaks off, the film proposes an ending, and it builds the bureaucracy not as an abstract nightmare but as something solid and familiar in provincial Russia. An early Balabanov: cold, grey and, in places, funny.
