What Happy-Go-Lucky Is About
A tractor driver from a village in the Altai and his wife set out for the first time in their lives to go south, to a resort on the Black Sea. The people they meet on the train, the differences of class and of town and country between them, and the man’s attempts to present himself as something other than he is are the film’s real subject, and the trip gets more complicated when the route goes through Moscow. Vasily Shukshin wrote it, directed it and played the lead himself, with his wife Lidiya Fedoseyeva-Shukshina as his wife in the film. Shukshin considered it the best of his own work. After shooting finished the film spent half a year with the censors, and the sections with the balalaika player’s songs were removed entirely. It opened on 2 April 1972.
