Hate to Love: Nickelback

Leigh Brooks's 2024 documentary is about a Canadian rock band that was commercially very successful and constantly mocked. They filled stadiums and sold millions of albums; in the same period they became a collective object of hatred online. The real subject is that second condition. Why this band was chosen, how the mockery spread and how the members carried it are covered; the phenomenon of the internet settling on a shared target is at the centre. The members speak openly and do not go on the defensive. The narrative does not argue about the quality of the music; the interest is in how taste became a marker of collective identity. The archive material is extensive. Who it's for: those who like music documentaries and are curious about internet culture. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical examination of the music; the documentary stands with the band.
