What He Who Must Die Is About
Adapted from Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel Christ Recrucified, the film is set during the years of the Greco-Turkish war in a Greek village living under Turkish authority. Every year the village stages a passion play, and this year the notables hand out the parts: a stuttering shepherd is to be Jesus, the butcher who wanted the role becomes Judas, the town prostitute becomes Mary Magdalene. Then a group of impoverished villagers, driven from their homes by the war, arrives led by their priest. The wealthy men of the town want nothing to do with them and clear the way for a massacre, and the roles in the play turn into the thing itself. Jules Dassin shot the film on location in Crete with a largely French cast. Melina Mercouri and Gert Frobe are among the players.
