Heart and Yummie

A maiasaura mother decides to raise a foundling egg alongside her own baby. What hatches is a tyrannosaurus. Named Heart, he grows up beside his herbivore brother, and when he learns the difference between carnivores and herbivores he has to leave the herd. Masaya Fujimori directed, from Tatsuya Miyanishi's series of children's books. It runs eighty-nine minutes. The idea is plain and hard: the rule of nature and the rule of love are not the same. Heart realises he cannot live without eating the animals he loves, and the dilemma is never resolved. The name in the title comes from the same contradiction: what Heart calls the small herbivore he adopts actually means delicious. The telling is aimed at children, but death and separation are shown directly. The animation style is plain; soft colours, economical movement. Who it is for: anyone after an emotional anime to watch with family. Who it is not for: viewers expecting a light children's film; the story is sad and unresolved.
