What Hearts of the World Is About
Young people growing up in a French village have their lives broken apart by the war. The German army occupies the place, destruction and violence follow, and the young resist, some of them successfully and some tragically, until French troops retake the town. D. W. Griffith's film came out in 1918 while the war was still being fought, which makes it as plainly a piece of propaganda as it is a work of cinema. Lillian and Dorothy Gish play the leads. How it depicts Germans follows entirely from that purpose, and anyone watching now should know the frame in advance.
