Hellboy

Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 adaptation deliberately rewrites the origin in Mike Mignola’s comic, knotting the histories of Hellboy, Rasputin and Professor Broom together so the second half plays less like a monster hunt than a family reckoning. In the fights the camera barely moves. Del Toro staged them after Ray Harryhausen, in wide shots, and invited Harryhausen to coach the animators; he declined, finding current films too violent. Beside the fast cutting of the 2000s it looks slow, because it wants you watching a creature cross the frame rather than an edit. Both Hellboy and Abe Sapien are played from inside full makeup, and in Abe’s case the body and the voice belong to different people: Doug Jones performs, David Hyde Pierce speaks, and Pierce kept his name off the credits because he regarded the character as Jones’s creation. The cemetery passage used a real Prague cemetery, and the shoot ran six days a week across 130 days, Sundays held for cutting. A good fit if you read the static wide fight framing as a decision rather than a limitation and want to watch a rubber body fill a room. Less so if you want Mignola’s origin intact, since the film rebuilds that chain and turns its 122 minutes toward the adoptive father line between Broom and Hellboy.
